history is on repeat (like a vinyl record)

abbey road now + then.

When Clay arrived, I was filled with apprehension, though maybe not for reasons one would think. There are precisely 16,689 songs on my iPod, spanning A.A. Bondy and the Japandroids to Tom Petty and Warren Zevon. Suffice to say, it takes a while to cycle through completely. It was daunting.

As I held Clay in the hospital room early that first morning as Eleanor slept, I realized I had the opportunity (responsibility) to pick the first song he ever heard. It would be his introduction to music – an important part of my life and one my own father had shared with me, starting twenty-five years ago. It needed to be timeless, hopeful, and, above all, just a really great song. And so, faced with all those choices and demands, I simply pushed play on the title that first came to mind. With its potential for duality and its lyrics about new beginnings, it seemed like the perfect pick. Together Clay and I welcomed in the day with Here Comes the Sun.

Note From Eleanor: Is it bad that the only songs I can think of right now are by 'N Sync? Poor Clay's first song would have been Here We Go

We'd love to know: what first song would/did you play for your baby?
