“Snips and snails
And puppy dogs’
tails,
That’s what little
boys are made of.”
- Early Nursery Rhyme
There was Travis and Old Yeller. Joe and Lassie. The
sharecropper’s son and Sounder. Billy and Old Dan and Little Ann. Ribsy and
Henry Huggins. Boys and their dogs form the basis of countless good stories.
There is something inherently compatible between a little
boy and a puppy – maybe it has to do with their mutual love of dirt, and
chasing after things, and otherwise getting into trouble. Together they make up
a powerful team of adventurers, for better or for worse. Surely every boy needs
a dog, if only for the sake of notable childhood memories.
And while coonhounds and terriers (the two most troublemaking
animals on earth) seem to go hand in paw with boys, pugs are up there too. I foresee
many a good story in Puck and Clay’s future.
