we were ready
Puck was our baby before the baby. We let him sleep in bed with us, we bought him toys just because, we agonized over leaving him with anyone else even for the weekend. Turns out, it was all in preparation for when the actual baby came along.
Owning a dog gives you a glimpse (a small one, of course, with obvious differences, but a glimpse nonetheless) of what life will be like taking care of something that can't do much of anything for himself. They both need to be fed, bathed, allowed naps (our pugs become total cranks without their twenty hours of sleep), and taken to extremely expensive doctor appointments. So if you're thinking of a baby anytime in the future, I'd first recommend a dog. Preferably a pug or other breed that's incredibly instagrammable, because that will just ready you for the million+ pictures you're going to take of your baby.
Note From Eleanor: See, aren't you glad I surprised you with a puppy? It was just prep for when I surprised you with a baby!
